Modder Creates a Power Cable with Fuses to Prevent Accidents in His RTX 4090

A Reddit user named malcanore18 experienced the notorious problem of the 12VHPWR power connector melting on his RTX 4090. Using his knowledge of electrical work, he came up with a solution: he created a custom power cable with fuses for his GPU. The cable includes six fuses, which he believes are safer not only for protecting the graphics card but also for personal safety.

“I don’t buy the whole ‘user error’ or ‘it wasn’t plugged all the way in’ argument. I think that’s just the corporate story they spun up to try and save face. I think the 4090 simply draws more current than the tiny pins in the plug can handle. The tiny pins act as a bottleneck of sorts. So let’s chuck in some fuses in the 6 active conductors to break the connection should an excessive draw occur,” said malcanore18 in his Reddit post.

The modder explained that if the RTX 4090 pulls enough power to burn one fuse, the other fuses will burn in a cascading way as the extra current gets redistributed through the remaining lines.

The Risk of Fire and the Need for Safety

Got burned by the infamous 12vhpwr connection. Here’s my solution to prevent that from happening again.

The creator of the fused cable highlights that this is not just about losing a component but also about preventing fire risks.

“If one fuse goes, it will cause the rest of the fuses to go in a cascading fashion as extra current gets redistributed in the remaining lines. I will need to replace 6 fuses should this happen, but at least I won’t need to send my card off again for repairs and, most importantly, possibly prevent my house from burning down,” he added.

This modification shows the importance of safety when dealing with high-power systems like the RTX 4090.
