Modder Turns a PlayStation 4 Slim into a Fully Portable Console
A modder has managed to convert a PlayStation 4 Slim, the smallest and most efficient version of the PS4, into a fully portable PS4. The project is particularly complex because it uses the console’s original hardware, which was never designed to run on battery power or operate in a portable form factor.
To build this portable PS4, the creator carefully studied the PS4 Slim motherboard and adapted it to fit inside a custom handheld-style chassis. Since the base hardware remains unchanged, this portable version can run PS4 games natively, without emulation or performance compromises.Modder Turns a PlayStation 4 Slim into a Fully Portable Console
OLED Screen and Native PS4 Performance
The screen choice sets this project apart from similar mods. Instead of an IPS panel, the modder used a 7-inch OLED display, which delivers better color reproduction. The screen runs at 1080p, an ideal resolution for the PS4, as most of its games are rendered at that resolution.
The portable PS4 also includes an HDMI output, allowing it to be connected to an external display just like a standard console.
Power is supplied by six battery packs, providing a total capacity of 130 Wh. This setup delivers up to 1.5 hours of battery life, with an average power consumption of around 88 watts.
To manage heat, the console features an active cooling system with a large rear-mounted fan. It also includes monitoring and safety measures to control temperatures and prevent damage. According to the mod’s creator, the device has been tested over several months and has operated without any issues.
In related news, a new hardware mod makes the PlayStation 3 more powerful, enabling GPU overclocking, Linux support, and unpatchable system features.
