Most of the GeForce 600 mobile GPUs are Fermi

While a lot of notebooks and laptops have already been announced and advertised featuring the next-generation mobile GPUs, it turns out that most of the ‘next-gen’ mobile GPUs are actually rebranded Fermi products.

A prime example is the GTX 675M, Nvidia’s current mobile flagship, is nothing more than a Fermi. In essence, it is a renamed 580M which features the same 620MHz core clock, 384 Shader cores as well as texture fill rate of 39.7 billion a second. It uses 256-bit GDDR5 at 1500MHz clock allowing 96 GB/sec throughput. In comparison, the desktop GTX 680 has around double the bandwidth. The mobile GPU does supports two-way SLI, although it’s hard to think where to place them aside from the massive and heavy 17″ laptops.

Other examples include the GTX 670 and GTX 675, both Fermi based, while the GT 660M, 650M and the 640M are Kepler cards. One exception is the GT 640M LE which should come in both the Fermi and Kepler versions, however no details in this one yet. On the lower end are more rebranded Fermi with the GT 635M, GT 630M, GT 620M and lastly the Geforce 610M.

Authentic Kepler parts are due to come soon, however they are most likely to be launch along with Ivy Bridge, which as far as we know, is still scheduled for April 29.

One thing all this rebranding will cause is confusion, unless you’re one of those with an incredible memory to remember which is what, you’ll need to search around to find a fully next-gen notebook.
