Motorola Misadvertise 360 Watch Internals

Some rather disturbing news has surfaced from iFixit.com – they’ve cracked open the new Moto 360 and have discovered a smaller than advertised battery within their unit. The advertised battery for the Moto 360 is 320mAh – however the one found inside iFixit’s was labelled as 300mAh. That’s a 7% reduction in total battery size, and is a serious concern for the wearable which has been critiqued heavily for it’s lower than expected battery life performance. Motorola could potentially find themselves in a bit of hot water regarding their advertised battery for the device.

Looking at the rest of the innards, the Moto 360 is an incredible amalgamation of design and engineering – with a fully circular PCB and of course the round LCD display. iFixit scored the repairability of the device a 3/10 – noting the the extreme prying required and difficulty removing glue in order to access any of the internal hardware. To replace the LCD screen for instance requires a near full deconstruction of the device.

Motorola has since released a timely statement regarding the matter:

The typical battery capacity for the Moto 360 is 320 mAh and the minimum is 300 mAh. In the mobile industry, sometimes both the minimum and typical capacity is listed on the battery, with the typical capacity quoted as the official battery size. Both figures are included on the batteries of our Moto X, Moto E and Moto G devices. In the case of smaller devices, we aren’t always able to list both figures. For Moto 360 we only had room for one figure and choose to list the minimal capacity of the battery. We see how this can be confusing and we will look into ways to add the typical capacity as well in the future.

Thank you iFixit for providing us with this information.
