MSI Afterburner undoubtedly represents one of, if not the, most popular software choices for users looking to apply overclocked settings to their graphics cards. With that being said, however, it hasn’t escaped a lot of the more enthusiast-level users’ attention that, despite its continued wide usage, it hasn’t received any kind of notable update for nearly a year now.
Following a report via Videocardz, however, the developer behind the software has indicated that due to a licensing issue with MSI, Afterburner is, for all intents and purposes, probably dead at this point!
MSI Afterburner May Be Dead!
Following comments from its creator, they have confirmed that for nearly a year now there has been a rather problematic obstruction between MSI and themselves. Although it does require a little reading between the lines, the short(ish) version is that the developer of MSI Afterburner is Russian. Why is this a problem? Well, with the ongoing situation with Ukraine, this has seen MSI put in a position in which they have (probably) been unable to make any payments to him for his work, and more so, sign a contract for a continuance of the licensing agreement.
Update – MSI has confirmed that this is, indeed, the problem. They are, however, looking to resolve this (if possible).
And just to hammer the point home, while you clearly wouldn’t want to work without being paid, you’d even more so not want to infringe on a license you didn’t have an active agreement with! – So, yeah, it’s an unfortunate situation for sure. And, in fairness, one in which there really isn’t specific blame to be put anywhere (well, except with Mr Putin possibly).
It’s just a rather odd spinoff issue that neither party clearly ever anticipated happening. – The only sad part is that until this can be resolved, MSI Afterburner is likely not set to receive any updates at all. In fact, given that this situation has already been in place for 11 months, this might actually see it result in MSI Afterburner itself possibly being, in terms of development, more or less dead now!
I mean, if it’s creator thinks that, who are we to disagree?…
