In direct contrast to the previous results, the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X falls behind the GTX 980 by a noticeable amount. This is surprising and I re-ran the benchmark multiple times to try and work out why the GTX 980 suddenly came out as the better option. Strangely enough, the results fell within a margin of error which suggests the current ranking order is correct.
When the resolution is increased to 1440p, the data reflects what I initially anticipated. As you can see, there’s hardly anything to choose between the GTX 980 and MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X.
The graphics card posts good numbers when running Doom on a 4K monitor and outperforms the RX 480. Saying that, the difference isn’t huge especially since Doom tends to favour NVIDIA hardware.
