MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X Plus Cranks Up GDDR5X Memory Speed to 11Gbps

NVIDIA has recently launched faster memory variants of their GTX 1080 graphics cards and to quote Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel: “These go to Eleven”…Gbps that is. From MSI’s stable comes the GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X Plus, outfitted with the latest Twin Frozr VI cooling system that uses five flattened nickel-plated copper heatpipes and dual ball-bearing TORX 2.0 fans that keeps temperatures and noise low while having the ability to shut itself down when the GPU temperature drops below 60C.

Out of the box, users can choose between three Boost/Base/Memory frequency presets:

  • 1847 MHz / 1708 MHz / 11110 MHz (OC Mode)
  • 1822 MHz / 1683 MHz / 11010 MHz (Gaming Mode)
  • 1733 MHz / 1607 MHz / 11010 MHz (Silent Mode)

To offload the weight of the substantial Twin Frozr VI cooling system, a brace plate and a backplate sandwiches the PCB which also acts as a heatsink for the on-board components (MSI calls this (close-quarters cooling”). This adds structural support to the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X Plus but also adds aesthetic value.

Speaking of looks, there are also a plethora of RGB LED effects vailable including a side logo and the accents towards the front of the shroud. Users can choose between having a steady LED color, or having it breathe and flash as well as react to game sound or music.

Underneath the hood, MSI has also upgraded the VRM significantly from the 7 phase standard to a 10-phase power design with Super Ferrite chokes and Tantalum Hi-C caps. Most importantly, despite the size, the MSI Gaming X Plus 1080 11Gbps fits a standard dual-slot height so users can run it in multi-GPU mode and not worry about compatibility or high temperature issues.
