MSI Teases the Return of GeForce RTX “Lightning” Ahead of CES 2026
MSI likes to surprise its fans. A few days before CES 2026, the company released a short and mysterious teaser that gives a big hint — the famous “Lightning” series is coming back. This news has quickly excited fans of overclocking and high-performance graphics cards.
In the teaser image shared by MSI, several GeForce RTX cards appear against a stormy background, accompanied by the slogan “I Can Hear Thunder.”
Hidden Clues
To accompany the announcement, MSI published a “weather forecast” running from December 30 to January 5. The first few days show calm weather, but January 5 is marked with a dramatic thunderstorm symbol. Interestingly, this date coincides with MSI’s scheduled press event at CES, where the company will unveil its new generation of PCs and components.
It’s hard to imagine any product other than the Lightning series behind this symbolic tease. Traditionally, this name is reserved for MSI’s most extreme models — those designed to push boundaries in clock speed, cooling, and power delivery.
The GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning
While MSI remains tight-lipped about the technical details, all signs suggest the new Lightning will be based on NVIDIA’s flagship GPU — the GeForce RTX 5090. Last year, MSI briefly showcased two “Special Edition” models that were clearly early Lightning prototypes.
These versions featured radically performance-oriented designs. One used a massive air-cooling system with five Stormforce fans in a triple-slot layout, built to handle extreme thermal loads. The other used liquid cooling, combining four fans and an MSI HydroCool setup for the most demanding users.
Historically, Lightning graphics cards are not built for the general public. Instead, they serve as showcases of engineering mastery. Oversized PCBs, reinforced power phases, custom BIOS configurations, and exceptional overclocking headroom define the Lightning DNA. These cards attract extreme overclockers while reinforcing MSI’s reputation as a performance leader.
With the rise of the GeForce RTX 50 series, the return of Lightning feels more relevant than ever. As GPUs grow more powerful, hotter, and power-hungry, MSI seems eager to remind everyone it still masters the art of uncompromising graphics design.
All eyes will be on MSI on January 5. If the GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning is indeed revealed, it could quickly become the ultimate benchmark in the ultra-high-end GPU segment — both for performance and overclocking potential.
