MSI unveils a 4GHz clocked notebook

MSI has today changed the definition of “portable overclocking”, and if it didn’t exist previously, it now does with the definition being: GT780DX.

This gaming laptop is equipped with a Core i7 processor going beyond the 4GHz barrier with factory overclocked settings. It is part of a limited edition which packs an Intel Core i7-2920XM Extreme Edition with frequencies of up to 4.16GHz on tap in Turbo Boost mode (instead of the 3.5GHz default Turbo speed).

Such speeds are possible without smoke or fire thanks to a superior cooling solution named “Cooler Boost” by MSI which says this cooling technology integrated in the fan enables them to work at higher rotation speeds than usual, allowing for temperature drops to go as far as 10 degrees Celsius.

The rest of specification sheet is more than worthwhile as well with a 17.3″ LED-backlit display with resolutions of either 1600×900 or 1920×1080. Graphics is powered by a Nvidia GeForce GTX 570M supported by 3GB of GDDR5 memory and up to 16GB of DDR3 system memory.

Up to two hard drives can be placed in this laptop, the best and premium option being two 750GB 7200RPM drives in RAID 0. Also available is a DVD or Blu-ray drive.

To top things off you’ll find a SteelSeries-made LED backlit keyboard to provide the gaming features, a couple USB 3.0 ports, an eSATA port, HDMI 1.4 and VGA video outputs as well as Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity and a 9-cell battery.

No pricing has been detailed for this limited edition overclocked model, however, the base (i.e. non-overclocked) model of the GT780DX with Core i7 2670QM processor sells for $1,749.99.
