The current order of motherboard vendors in terms of global sales is as follows:

  • 1st – ASUS
  • 2nd – Gigabyte
  • 3rd – ASRock
  • 4th – MSI

That said Digitimes reports that MSI is gunning to be back in third place again and is looking to overtake ASRock. MSI has shipped 2.8 to 3 million units so far in the first half of this year meaning they are on for a total of about 6-7 million. ASRock has already shipped 3.7 million in the first half of this year and expects to ship 4.3 million in the second half bringing their total to 8 million.

That said MSI probably won’t catch ASRock this year but if they can continue aggressive growth into 2014 then we could see them retake third spot from ASRock.

According to Digitimes’ industry sources

“MSI still has strong R&D capabilities, but because its project management failed to coordinate with marketing and sales, the company seen development lag seriously behind its competitors’….However, MSI has recently started adjusting its strategies and is currently targeting ASRock as its major competitor.”
