Netflix May Lose Another Studio; Spry Fox Plans to Go Independent Again
It seems that Netflix is about to lose another one of its internal studios. Spry Fox reportedly plans to become independent again, although it is expected to continue collaborating with the streaming company. The terms of this new arrangement have not yet been revealed.
There has been no official announcement so far, but the studio’s founders, David Edery and Daniel Cook, have confirmed Spry Fox’s intention to split from Netflix in an interview with Game File (thanks Game World Observer), the publication led by journalist Stephen Totilo.
This would mark another reduction in Netflix’s gaming division, which has been gradually shrinking even as the company appears close to completing its massive acquisition of Warner Bros. This acquisition could bring major changes to Netflix’s entertainment and gaming strategies.
About Spry Fox and Its Games
Spry Fox is a small studio known for creating unique, often cozy games, mostly aimed at the mobile market. Some of its best-known titles include Triple Town, Road Not Taken, and the life simulation Cozy Grove, which drew comparisons to Animal Crossing and achieved notable success.
In 2022, Spry Fox officially became part of Netflix during the company’s push into video games. However, this expansion was followed by a later downsizing of the division.
Recently, news broke about Netflix acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal reportedly worth around $80 billion, which also includes WB Games. This major move could reshape Netflix’s position in the gaming industry, even as it has already shut down studios like Boss Fight Entertainment and Team Blue, and now faces the potential departure of Spry Fox.
