New Glitch Smashes Mario 64 Speedrun Record

Super Mario 64 may now be 20 years old, but that hasn’t stopped many loyal fans from continuing to enjoy everything it has to offer. Even more so, the Speedrunning scene has continued to push the game to its breaking point, literally, in the bid for a new world record. Now the biggest innovation in the games speedrun times since 2007 has been discovered.
Speedrunning team Tyler Kehne, MKDasher, sonicpacker, Snark, SilentSlayers, Gaehne D, Eru, and ToT have reached what they call the “holy grail” of Mario 64 sequence breaks. The trick, known as the Moat Door Skip, has long been thought possible but hasn’t been pulled off before, until now.
“Everyone who has ever owned this game has tried (in vain) to open the door to the basement while it is still underwater,” they explained. “The purpose in doing so is to obsolete the first of the two keys held by Bowser, and thus make Bowser in the Dark World and the 1st Bowser fight unnecessary.”
The speedrun cut an impressive 39.1 seconds off the old record, which is a huge amount of time after 20-years of pushing the games limits. Check out how they did it in just 4:21.67 in the video below!
