NieR: Automata May Get a Sequel, Square Enix Hint Suggests
The future of NieR: Automata is still unclear, but Square Enix recently shared a small hint that seems to point toward a possible sequel to the popular action game created with PlatinumGames.
A special livestream event was held to celebrate the game’s ninth anniversary. During the event, Square Enix shared updated sales numbers, revealing that the game has now reached 10 million copies sold worldwide. However, the most interesting detail appeared briefly during the broadcast.
For a short moment, the message “NieR: Automata to be continued” appeared on screen. This suggests that some kind of sequel or new project related to the series may already be in development at Square Enix.
A Small But Clear Hint
Of course, this is not an official announcement, and it is not enough to confirm a sequel. Still, it clearly shows that Square Enix plans to continue the series, and possibly give a direct follow-up to Automata.
The franchise includes different stories and timelines, but this message seems to focus specifically on the world created by Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames. Considering the strong success of the game, it would not be surprising to see it return.
In the past, the producer of NieR mentioned that we should expect something next year, though he said not to expect too much. That comment could now be seen as another hint pointing toward a new chapter.
For now, fans will have to wait for a proper announcement. But after reaching 10 million copies sold and showing that short message during the anniversary event, it seems clear that NieR: Automata is not finished yet.
