Nike is trying to keep the promise of self-lacing sneakers alive with their HyperAdapt shoe line. The concept of which, were originally seen in the classic 80’s film Back to the Future. Unfortunately, these HyperAdapt shoes sells for a very high $720 USD (€700) price tag and were launched in 2016.
They have even released a limited edition using the original design (Air Mag) from the movie. That one eventually sold out quickly as well. Thankfully, it was entirely for charities supporting Parkinson’s disease. The same disease that is afflicting Michael J. Fox, star of Back to the Future film franchise.
So naturally, it is a safe bet that Nike will try to launch yet another self-lacing shoe down the line. Unfortunately, it appears that it won’t be out this for the 2018 holiday season just yet.
According to the latest Nike earning’s call (via SoleCollector), CEO Mark Parker intends to expand their SmartShoe line in 2019. This includes “a new adaptive performance platform in basketball at the $350 price point,”
This is great news for fans and shoe collectors since that is half the price of the HyperAdapt 1.0. Rumours of the second generation HyperAdapt actually surfaced as early as 2017. So fans just need to wait a bit more to get their hands on one.
