NimbleVR Kickstarter Campaign Ends Early, They Work for Oculus VR Now

NimbleVR and their wonderful depth sensing camera technology have been snapped up by Oculus Rift creators, Oculus VR. Nimble were doing well on Kickstarter, offering an Oculus Rift attachment that would allow you to track your hands in real-time, making it a perfect addition for VR gaming, as it meant you could get hands on with your game world.

We don’t know if Oculus will use the same technology, of if they just wanted to snap up the general expertise of the people at Nimble for another, or similar project, but I am certain they’ll be put to good use in making the next iteration of the Oculus Rift even more impressive.

NimbleVR released the following statement;

Today we are ending our Kickstarter campaign because we have awesome news — we are joining Oculus.

Since we started in 2012, we’ve been focused on building a hand-tracking system that could deliver a great user experience. We felt that with advances in 3D camera technology and the backgrounds of our team, we could finally tackle the hard computer vision and human-computer interaction problems that stood in the way of gesture recognition in the past.

Our work started off with color gloves, evolved into markerless tracking with multiple Kinect cameras, and eventually led to this Kickstarter for the Nimble Sense, a 3D camera that could be mounted on an Oculus Rift and bring hands into VR. All of this couldn’t have been possible without the support of our partners, our early users and the Nimble VR Team’s dedication and hard work.

Today, we’re happy to share that we’ll be joining forces with Oculus, a team that is creating an entirely new medium, platform and industry. We’re excited not only to continue to push at the boundaries of input and user experience in VR, but to do so with the resources and means to make a bigger impact on a larger audience.

This is the beginning of a new chapter for us. Thanks again for all of your support, criticisms, gentle prodding and constructive feedback during our Kickstarter campaign!

– Rob, Chris, Kenrick and the Nimble VR Team

Thank you Kickstarter for providing us with this information.
