Today, Nintendo has released some notable sales news for the last quarter, with multiple games surpassing the one million units mark, including the remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, among other recent releases. However, the company has now adjusted its sales forecast for its current console, citing a decrease due to high market saturation.
The company has lowered its sales expectations for the device and its games as the wait for new hardware lengthens. Sales declined 31% year-over-year in the quarter ended Sept. 30, leading the company to cut its full-year forecast to 12.5 million units from an initial projection of 13.5 million.
The Switch has racked up 146.04 million units sold since its launch over seven years ago, leaving it about 8 million units shy of the total sales of the company’s most widely distributed Nintendo DS. Despite its longevity, interest in the Switch appears to be waning, leaving room for anticipation for a new system.
In terms of games, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has sold 2.58 million copies by the end of September, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the console’s best-selling title, with an additional 2.31 million copies sold in the same period. This reinforces its position as one of the platform’s biggest hits.
While no details have been given regarding new hardware, Nintendo’s recent sales update makes it clear that the company is in a transitional stage. Analysts and fans are speculating that a major announcement could be just around the corner as the company prepares to take the next step in its technological evolution.
