Nintendo Switch 2 Has Surpassed the Total Sales of Three Consoles in the UK
According to journalist Christopher Dring, based on data collected by Nielsen, Nintendo Switch 2 has surpassed the total UK sales of three different consoles: Wii U, Dreamcast, and PlayStation Vita.
Launched in stores on June 5, Nintendo’s new hybrid console needed only six months to reach sales numbers higher than those achieved in the UK by these three platforms during their entire lifetime.
The comparison with Wii U is especially striking. It is widely seen as Nintendo’s last major failure, yet its core idea was later improved and successfully relaunched with the original Nintendo Switch, and now again with Nintendo Switch 2.
Can It Be Called a Big Success?
The situation is different for Dreamcast and PlayStation Vita. Both consoles were loved by a dedicated group of fans but failed to reach a wider audience, mainly due to strong competition. This ultimately led to the end of their production lines.
The latest official figures show 10.36 million units sold as of September 30 for Nintendo Switch 2. An updated report is expected soon, which will show how the console performed during the important holiday season.
What is already clear is that Switch 2 has silenced doubts from those who believed a simple hardware upgrade would not be enough to repeat the success of the original model. Instead, the console is clearly on track to achieve that goal.
In other news, Shuhei Yoshida, a former executive at Sony, recently shared his thoughts on why the PlayStation Vita failed.
