Nintendo Switch 2 Is a “Great Console,” But Not Powerful Enough for Gothic 1 Remake, Says Dev
In a comment that is sure to spark discussion among gamers, Alkimia Interactive has explained that it will not be bringing Gothic 1 Remake to the Nintendo Switch 2. Despite calling it a “great console,” the team stated that the hardware is “not up to the technological standards” required for the game.
Alkimia Interactive is currently working on Gothic 1 Remake, a full remake of the classic first chapter in the open-world action RPG series. The goal is to give new life to the beloved classic with a completely updated technical framework and visuals. A demo of the game has already been released, which recently included several improvements requested by players. The full version is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Developer Explains the Decision
When asked about the possibility of releasing the game on Nintendo Switch 2, studio head Reinhard Pollice made a statement that many may understand, though it is likely to spark debate.
“Switch 2 is a great console, but I think you have to have a different development approach. We are trying to push the limits for the current generation of consoles, and I think the Switch 2 is not at that level, unfortunately,” he said.
It’s true that there is a noticeable difference in hardware performance between the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on one side, and the Nintendo Switch 2 on the other. However, Nintendo’s console has already proven capable of handling technically demanding game ports, so it’s hard to imagine that Gothic 1 Remake would be entirely impossible to run.
Pollice’s comments may simply reflect the studio’s focus and limitations rather than direct criticism of the hardware. Alkimia Interactive is a mid-sized team, and developing an optimized version for a less powerful console would require significant extra work.
