Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 Receive New System Update 21.2.0
Nintendo has just released a new system update for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the console firmware to version 21.2.0. This marks the first official update of 2026 for both platforms.
The update is mandatory and should install automatically. However, users can also apply it manually by selecting “System Update” from the settings menu on the console dashboard.
As is common with smaller updates, Nintendo has not shared many details about the changes. The company simply mentioned that the update focuses on improving general stability and the overall user experience.
Improved Stability and Minor Fixes
Version 21.2.0 for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 is now available as of January 13, 2026. According to Nintendo, it brings “general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.”
Both consoles received the update simultaneously, suggesting that they share the same internal adjustments. While no new features have been announced, it’s likely that this update includes security patches and bug fixes to ensure smoother performance.
Although the update doesn’t introduce any visible changes, such maintenance patches are important for keeping the consoles secure and running efficiently. These updates typically optimize internal software, fix minor glitches, and prevent potential vulnerabilities.
In other news, Nintendo Switch is on the verge of becoming the second best-selling console of all time, having surpassed most other systems and nearly tying the Nintendo DS.
