It is only 4 months old, and at the risk of stating the obvious, the Nintendo Switch has been a great success for Nintendo. Needing a hot blaze, after the damp squib that the Wii-U was, Nintendo is celebrating much better than expected figures for the Switch.
When released 4 months ago, the timing was almost perfect. There were no new consoles on the horizon for quite a while. The PS4 Pro had been released about 6 months before and although the figures for that have been recent, even including the standard slim Ps4, the Nintendo Switch is currently, would you believe, winning the console wars.
Since March 2017, the Nintendo has moved 4.7 million units reported NextPowerUp. Now, admittedly, this doesn’t touch on the 60 million units the PS4 has sold. That being said, for the same period the PS4, including the new PS4 Pro, sold only circa 2.5 million units.
If you consider that this has also been in conjunction with significant supply issues, it’s pretty impressive. Nintendo has always claimed that the difficulty in getting switch was not intentional. Most people aren’t buying that line. A significant number of people believe the Nintendo Switch is another example of limiting supply to create false demand. It wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo was accused of this. Remember the whole affair with so-called rare Amibos?
With games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Zelda: BotW the Nintendo Switch has a strong catalog. There are of course question marks over if this will suffer from the 3rd party publishing issues. It was, after all, that which killed the Wii-U. With the new Mario Odyssey coming in November and the X-box One X likely to around £500, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nintendo Switch didn’t continue to win the war.
Nintendo back on top of the console market? 10 years ago no one would have believed you, but trust me, they’re back and boy are they swinging!
