Noctua Introduces Ryzen Threadripper Compatible TR4-SP3 Coolers

AMD’s new Ryzen Threadripper HEDT processors use a new land-grid array TR4 socket. This significantly larger than any desktop processors before it. In fact this is the same size as the socket SP3 that will be used by AMD EPYC server processors. Because of this, CPU cooling manufacturers who take cooling seriously are not just going to create a new mounting bracket and calling it a day. Those that are serious about cooling actually created a CPU cooler with a larger contact base as well. That is why Noctua has a new line of TR4-SP3 CPU coolers specifically for use with this new AMD CPU.

Noctua TR4-SP3 CPU Cooler Line

Noctua is announcing three initial models for the TR4-SP3 CPU cooler line based on their 90mm, 120mm and 140mm single-tower designs. These feature a completely redesigned contact surface base that provides full IHS coverage. All coolers have a fully-nickel plated copper heatpipe and base as well.

NH-U14S TR4-SP3

The Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 stands 165mm tall and is 75mm deep with the fan. It should be clear of DRAM compatibility issues even in push-pull configuration since it has a slim body design. The 140mm NF-A15 PWM fan included uses standard 120mm mounting holes but also has anti-vibration pads for vibration dampening. It operates from 300 up to 1500 RPM and tops out at 24.6dBA.

NH-U12S TR4-SP3

The NH-U12S TR4-SP3 on the other hand uses a 120mm fan and stands 158mm tall. Like the NH-U14S, it is clear of DRAM clearance issues because of the slim body design. It has a slightly less wider body than the NH-U14S and is made specifically for 120mm fans. The included NF-F12 PWM fan operates up to 1500 RPM with a noise level that tops out at 22.4 dBA.

NH-U9S TR4-SP3

Although it is the smallest of the bunch, the Noctua NH-U9S TR4-SP3 is a formidable cooler in its own right. Unlike the NH-U14S and NH-U12S, the NH-U9S TR4-SP3 comes with a pair of 92mm NF-A9 PWM fans. These operate up to 2000 RPM, although only generating up to 22.4dBA. Like all of Noctua’s “slim” series tower coolers, it is fully free of DRAM clearance issues. Since it only stands 125mm tall, it is also highly compatible in almost any case enclosure.

Pricing and Availability

All Noctua TR4-SP3 CPU coolers should hit retail stores by the end of August. The suggested retail price is available below:

  • NH-U12S TR4-SP3: EUR 69.90 / USD 69.90
  • NH-U9 TR4-SP3: EUR 69.90 / USD 69.90
