Nokia’s “Normandy” Budget Android Smartphone Expected This Month At MWC

We heard vague rumours about an Android-powered Nokia smartphone just over a month ago but now those rumours are gearing up. The Wall Street Journal reports that Nokia is close to unveiling its Android powered budget handset that is currently known only as “Normandy”. The Normandy handset is expected to be revealed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event later this month according to anonymous sources who spoke with the WSJ.

The device is expected to run a customised interface that will focus on Microsft and Nokia services while stripping out as much Google content as is possible. The new handset from Nokia is expected to arrive shortly before the Nokia and Microsoft deal is finalised this year. This will see Microsoft commandeering Nokia’s mobile division to take on its biggest mobile rival – Google’s Android. Of course there would be substantial irony behind Microsoft gaining smartphone market share through selling Nokia-branded Android-powered phones so only time will tell if the “Normandy” handset ever sees the light of day.
