The pricing on the AMD cards is all over the place right now. It’s not exactly a new product, and there’s new stock, old stock, and second-hand stock that changes prices faster than I can check them. There are short-term deals and price hikes all over the place. However, it’s typically around £120-140 here in the UK. Readers in the US can expect to pay $130 – $150. Those with more premium coolers and premium names like “Asus” can expect to pay up to £180/$180.
The Asus RoG STRIX GTX 1650 is tricky too, as it’s a “premium” model of the cheap card. It’s as near as makes no difference £180/$180. You’re paying for the look though, and can get basically the same performance for as around £140/£140, even from ASUS, putting the cards on a pretty equal price bracket.
I was really hoping to see the Nvidia card close the gap on the AMD card even more than it did. However, I still think Nvidia has the more appealing card, at least for me. Yet, on the other hand, I can see most gamers ignoring what I say and buying the AMD card anyway. They’d be right to do so too, it’s faster, and when it comes to gamers it’s FPS above all else, right?
Well, for one, it’s a well tried and tested chipset. We know what it can do, the drivers are bloody brilliant and have been optimised within an inch of their life over the last couple of years too. It’s a very stable platform for gamers, and offers FreeSync, which is much more often featured on monitors over G-Sync.
Well, once overclocked it very closely apes the performance of the RX570. Of course, AMD can overclock too, but at the cost of efficiency and heat, Nvidia have them well and truly trumped. If you’re building a tiny gaming PC, the low power and low heat of the Nvidia card will pay off. Less chance of throttling due to over heating, much cheaper to run, and no doubt quieter too. Plus, if you do have a G-Sync display, you can make use of that too.
Both cards performed pretty similar to each other, there’s only a few FPS in it. Yes, the AMD card was a bit faster. However, gamers in this price range are likely going to stick to medium settings. We tested at high. They’re also more like to have 60 Hz displays and leave V-Sync turned on. In a blind study, I doubt you could tell either card apart under those circumstances.
