Nvidia GTX 650 specifications revealed

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a “GTX” X50 card from Nvidia. The 500 series saw the GTX 550 Ti, but no non-Ti version. The 400 series saw the GTS 450 and the 200 series saw the GTS 250 ( a rebranded and further overclocked 9800GT) so ultimately we have never really seen a GTX X50 card from Nvidia.

Therefore knowing a GTX 650 is on the way is a first for the green team. The GTX 650 is expected to slot underneath the GTX 650Ti and above the GT 640 in terms of its 600 series performance rankings.

The specifications of the card are as follows:

  • 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM
  • 28nm GK107 GPU
  • 384 CUDA cores
  • 128 bit memory bus
  • Clock speeds undetermined

The 1GB of RAM is pretty standard for a card of this price point, the use of a 128 bit memory bus is a tad on the stingy side but should suffice for the performance level of the card this is trying to replace – the GTX 550Ti. The card should be targeting the £100-£120 market segment. Nvidia’s use of the GK107 GPU is interesting – it means the GPU is the same design as that of the GT 610, 620 and 630 but not the GT 640. After the release of the GT 640 with GDDR3 memory, many suggested there would be a faster GDDR5 equivalent released, it now seems that this card will fulfill that role.

Ultimately though, this card will not be able to compete at all with AMD’s equivalent offerings at the same price point, if past experiences are anything to go by then you’d be better off bagging a GTX 460 than paying £120 for one of these.

The launch date is September the 17th.
