Nvidia Jetson Orin NX Module Found Inside Russian S-71M Cruise Missile
Ukrainian military intelligence has identified high-tech Western components inside a Russian S-71M “Monochrome” air-to-surface cruise missile, including an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX chip.
An analysis of the remains recovered from the front found that the missile contained a board based on the 16GB Nvidia Jetson Orin NX AI processor, with silicon number TE980M-A1, using the Tegra T234 platform.
The Jetson Orin NX module is a system-on-module (SoM) originally designed for robotics, commercial drones and edge computing. The hardware combines an 8-core Arm Cortex-A78AE CPU with an Ampere architecture GPU featuring 1,024 CUDA cores and 32 Tensor cores, providing up to 157 TOPS of computing power.
Russian S-71M Cruise Missile Found Using Nvidia Jetson Orin NX AI Module
Unlike the S-71K “Kover” variant, which is designed to attack fixed, pre-set coordinates, the S-71M “Monochrome” works as a hybrid between a cruise missile and loitering munition. The inclusion of the Jetson Orin architecture suggests that the missile uses AI algorithms for recognition, autonomous searching and real-time target identification while in flight.
The discovery once again raises questions about export controls on dual-use semiconductors. Nvidia clarified that the Jetson Orin NX is a consumer-grade product aimed at developers and startups, while reaffirming that the company does not sell its products in Russia or design them for military purposes. The availability of these modules through second-hand resellers makes them difficult to track, so these chips are likely reaching Russia through those channels.
Interestingly, the module’s Tegra T234 chip belongs to the same Ampere architecture family as the Tegra T239 chip designed for the Nintendo Switch 2. This shows how high-performance consumer hardware can also end up being diverted for complex military uses such as this one.
