Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti Graphics Card Review

Things are heating up in the graphics card space, as today sees NVIDIA dropping their latest offering in the 50 series lineup, the RTX 5070 Ti. NVIDIA claims this GPU will give users still rocking an RTX 3070 Ti a reason to upgrade through uplifts in performance and the latest features, like DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation. However, at $749 and with AMD’s 9000 series on the horizon, it’s already starting off on the back foot, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of gains the new Blackwell-based GPU brings us over not only its Ampere predecessor but also what increase we see generation on generation when comparing it to its Ada Lovelace sibling, the RTX 4070 Ti. But before we get into that, here’s a quick word from this video’s sponsor. Okay, so before we get things started, I want to add a small caveat to this review. Our RTX 5080 review was nearly an hour long (YouTube), and while we at eTeknix believe it was one of the most well-rounded reviews on the internet, it was long and there was a lot involved. As we don’t have a Founders Edition for the 5070 Ti, I want to condense things somewhat and focus purely on the GPU and not the MSI Ventus 3X cooler that I have here, as we’ll have a separate feature for that, drilling down into the cooler, the overclocking potential and all of that good stuff. I’ll say for now that I believe most media outlets are getting the same card, so that should make it easy for you to compare with other reviews and see how things line up. Now, before we get into the benchmarks, let’s talk specs, as the 5070 Ti does pack some power due to NVIDIA opting for the same GB203 core, just a slightly different variant with the GB203-200-A1, compared to the GB203-400-A1 on the RTX 5080. In terms of the nitty-gritty, this means we have the same die size at 378 mm² and the same 45.6 billion transistors. This means that the 5070 Ti comes in with 8,960 CUDA cores, which is a 17% increase from the 4070 Ti and a 46% uplift from the 3070 Ti. The same increases follow for the texture mapping units, streaming multiprocessors, tensor cores and RT cores, and we see a healthy uplift in L2 cache, now matching the RTX 5080 at 64 MB, compared to 48 MB on the 4070 Ti and a lowly 4 MB on the 3070 Ti. We also have 16 GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, matching that of the RTX 5080, though with a slightly lower memory bandwidth of 896 GB/s. This also means that we now have 6 GB more than the 4070 Ti and double that of the 3070 Ti, so those looking for an upgrade from the 3070 Ti could see that as a huge selling point. In terms of clock speeds, the 5070 Ti comes in with a base clock of 2,295 MHz, a boost clock of 2,452 MHz, and a memory speed of 1,750 MHz or 28 Gbps effective. However, with the 3X OC model we have here from MSI, we see a slight increase in the boost clock to 2,482 MHz, with the same memory speed of 1,750 MHz. All of this bundled up gives us a TDP of 300 W, and for this card, NVIDIA recommends a 700 W PSU as a minimum. Though, as always, depending on your other components and mainly your processor, I’d always recommend going slightly higher, around the 850 W mark, to give yourself some headroom and to future-proof your system. So, on paper, there’s the steady flow of increases in specs that we’d expect from generation to generation, and hopefully, this all equates to a good, strong performance uplift as well. https://youtu.be/I2dqGTJ_Hj4 How We Test We continue to update our testing methods around once per year. As such, we re-test older hardware to reflect changes over time. These can be driver updates, Windows updates, game patches, and more; all of which have an impact on performance figures. Furthermore, we update our test benches to newer and more relevant hardware. This means that our new reviews aren’t always comparable to those of older reviews, so please compare the testing methodology on older reviews should you be trying to compare them with newer ones. Replicate Our Results When it comes to our benchmarks in our reviews, the benchmarks are pretty self-explanatory and are kept as simple as possible, although there are a few exceptions. Remember that your choice of a graphics card, CPU, the silicon lottery, and other factors can yield different numbers, and there’s always a margin for error when using any software. Links are provided below, as well as the settings we use. We encourage you to not just look at how one product compares to any other, but how it compares to your own. You should then look at the percentage improvement from your current hardware to the hardware tested here to give you a ballpark figure of how much of an upgrade this will provide you with. Some applications are specifically used for testing, while others are simply used for monitoring and to aid us in making sure that our results are as accurate as possible. Software Used 3DMark FireStrike & TimeSpy (download) Gaming To gauge performance levels which are easily reproduced time after time, by both ourselves and our readers, we now stick strictly to games default profiles. Given how powerful most modern cards are getting, we've began using more demanding profiles for most games, but will otherwise state on a per game basis if we use other profiles beyond High, Ultra, Maximum or their respective equivalent at all resolutions. V-Sync is always disabled in our testing, and all FPS caps that can be removed are. We also enable XMP and Resizable bar technology across all platforms to keep things as fair as possible. Games While we test a lot of games, it's not possible to display all of the data on the website or in our videos. Instead, we include access to all of our testing data for our Patreon members (link), where members get a ton of other benefits as well. What we do, however, is display charts for averages across all game titles to give a better picture of performance across all titles tested. A Plague Tale: Requiem Alan Wake II Baldur's Gate 3 Black Myth Wukong CS2 Cyberpunk 2077 F1 24 Fortnite Hogwarts Legacy Indiana Jones And The Great Circle Starfield War Thunder Resolutions 1080 (Full HD) 1440 4K Some tests will also include features such as NVIDIA DLSS and Ray Tracing. However, these will be clearly labelled and may only appear in reviews for graphics cards that support those features. Power Consumption Not being content with simply reading total system power draw, we now run F1 24 for an hour loop and measure power draw at the end of the loop for the most accurate measurement that represents real-world gameplay experience. Temperatures We take temperature readings after the same hour-long F1 24 loop with no other background programs running, again to simulate a real-world gaming experience. 3DMark TimeSpy Extreme 3DMark Time Spy Extreme is a DirectX 12 benchmark test that pushes even the most powerful gaming PCs to their limits. It renders at a demanding 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) and includes a CPU test designed to measure the performance of high-end processors with 8 or more cores. This makes it an ideal benchmark for evaluating the latest graphics cards and top-of-the-line CPUs, especially when considering demanding tasks like gaming at 4K resolution and beyond. So, kicking things off with a synthetic test and 3DMark Time Spy, the 5070 Ti comes in with 15% more performance in the overall score compared to the 4070 Ti, 9% more than the 4070 Ti SUPER, and a very healthy 55% more than the 3070 Ti – the card that NVIDIA is hoping consumers will be upgrading from. This also puts the 5070 Ti just 2% below the RTX 4080 and 1% ahead of the 7900 XT, though this is a synthetic test and doesn’t always relate to what we see in real-world gaming performance. A Plague Tale: Requiem A Plague Tale: Requiem is a stealth-survival horror adventure that serves as a direct sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence. Players continue the harrowing journey of Amicia and Hugo de Rune, two young siblings navigating a plague-ridden France in the 14th century. The game features stunning visuals, intense action sequences, and a gripping narrative that explores themes of family, resilience, and the darkness within. For our first game, we ran A Plague Tale at 1440p, and straight away, we can see the 5070 Ti nestled between the 4080 and 4080 SUPER, sitting just 3% behind the SUPER variant. This also puts it 25% ahead of the 4070 Ti, 17% ahead of the 4070 Ti SUPER, and 76% ahead of the RTX 3070 Ti, though the uplift in the lows over the 4070 Ti was much lower at just 5%, though this is something we’ve consistently seen across the 50 series, while it was much stronger over the 4070 Ti SUPER, which seemed to lack somewhat. As we move up to 4K, the 5070 Ti still holds strong, placed again between the two 4080 series cards at 68 FPS. This puts it 28% ahead of the RTX 4070 Ti, 17% ahead of the 4070 Ti SUPER, and 74% ahead of the 3070 Ti and is already looking to shape up to be a pretty impressive GPU, though we are only one game in at this point. Alan Wake II Alan Wake II is a survival horror game and the long-awaited sequel to Remedy Entertainment's cult classic, Alan Wake. This time, the story takes a darker turn, delving deeper into the psychological and supernatural elements that made the original so compelling. Players can expect a chilling atmosphere, intense combat encounters, and a mind-bending narrative that will keep them on the edge of their seats. In Alan Wake II, the RTX 5070 Ti comes in very close to the RTX 4080, separated by just 2 FPS in favour of the more expensive card, which equates to the newer 5070 Ti sitting just 2% slower, which, given the price point, is perfectly fine. This does mean that we see an 18% uplift over the 4070 Ti, a 13% increase over the 4070 Ti SUPER, and a pretty huge 90% faster than the 3070 Ti, showing that NVIDIA’s claim could be looking good for those wanting to skip the 40 series and go straight for this card. It’s also nice to see the 1% lows coming in a lot stronger in this title and at this resolution. As we move up to 4K, it’s a similar story, with the more expensive, but older, RTX 4080 pushing ahead by a single FPS, showing that the 5070 Ti does have a value-for-money argument. This also sees an uplift of 19% over the 4070 Ti, 14% more performance over the 4070 Ti SUPER, and again another strong increase over the 3070 Ti, of 92%. Baldur's Gate 3 Baldur's Gate 3 is a highly acclaimed role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms universe. Developed by Larian Studios, it offers a deep and immersive experience with turn-based combat, intricate storylines, and a vast world to explore. Players can create their own custom characters or choose from a roster of origin characters, each with their own unique backstories and motivations. In Baldur’s Gate 3, the 5070 Ti rivals the more expensive RTX 4080, falling just 2% behind, though it’s still enough to see an 8% increase in performance over the 4070 Ti SUPER, which isn’t groundbreaking but is still welcomed considering the lower launch pricing of this card. Compared to the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, we’re now good for another 16% more frames and, more importantly, see an uplift of 70% over the 3070 Ti from many years ago. At 4K, it’s a similar story, where the 5070 Ti comes in 5% behind the RTX 4080, while still packing another 10% more performance over the 4070 Ti SUPER, along with coming in 23% faster than the 4070 Ti, and 65% more than the 3070 Ti, so some fairly strong uplifts, though other titles should see a little wider margins. Black Myth Mukong Black Myth Wukong is an action role-playing game inspired by the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West." Developed by Game Science, it features stunning graphics, challenging combat encounters, and a captivating story based on the legendary Monkey King. Players can expect a unique blend of Chinese mythology and action-packed gameplay. In Black Myth: Wukong, the levels of performance versus the 4080 series still show some strong promise, though that is made stronger by the pretty terrible 1% low figure of our 4080, as the averages come in nigh on identical. This does mean that we see a smaller 11% increase over the 4070 Ti SUPER, though still have the 5070 Ti packing 17% more frames than the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, and a still impressive, though lesser than what we’ve seen in other games, 71% over the 3070 Ti. At 4K, the gap between the 5070 Ti and 4080 series cards does draw wider, though we’re only talking 2 FPS, but it’s enough to see a 12% uplift over the 4070 Ti SUPER, 24% more than the 4070 Ti, and 77% more frames than the 3070 Ti, though this time we do now see much stronger 1% low figures, which, as I’ve mentioned before, I think really comes down to optimisations and driver updates. CS2 CS2 (Counter-Strike 2) is the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic tactical first-person shooter, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Developed by Valve, it promises to revolutionise the competitive FPS scene with updated graphics, refined gameplay mechanics, and new features. Players can expect the same intense tactical gameplay that has made the franchise so popular, but with a fresh coat of paint and exciting new additions. In Counter-Strike 2 at 1440p, we are still quite limited by our processor, and there isn’t too much information to take away from the chart, though you could argue that it’s a good way to show that the GPU is being pushed to its fullest, as the 5070 Ti lines up towards the top of our chart, though a higher resolution is always going to paint a clearer picture. It’s here at 4K where we see exactly that. The 4080 in this game does push ahead by 8% and comes in with strong 1% lows to match, though the 5070 Ti still manages to command a 6% lead over the 4070 Ti SUPER, a 10% uplift over the 4070 Ti, and a 58% lead over the 3070 Ti, so not as much as we have seen, but still welcomed nonetheless. Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action role-playing game set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City. Developed by CD Projekt Red, it offers a vast and immersive world filled with diverse characters, complex storylines, and a wide range of customization options. Players can create their own unique cyberpunk character and explore the city's underbelly, completing missions, engaging in cybernetic enhancements, and making choices that shape their destiny. Moving onto Cyberpunk at 1440p and again, it’s very much the same. The 5070 Ti falls just behind the RTX 4080, though again, the 1% lows seem to be improved a little in comparison. When looking at generation to generation, the 5070 Ti now comes in 13% faster than the 4070 Ti SUPER, 16% faster than the 4070 Ti, and 68% faster than the 3070 Ti, so not the strongest uplifts we’ve seen, but there’s still enough of a boost to make an upgrade worthwhile for some users. At 4K, again, we’re only seeing a single FPS difference to the more expensive RTX 4080, along with a 15% increase in frames over the 4070 Ti SUPER, a healthier 21% over the 4070 Ti, and 62% more performance than the RTX 3070 Ti from yesteryear. That again makes it a meaningful upgrade for 30-series users, though 40-series owners may see fewer reasons to switch. F1 24 F1 24 is the official video game of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship. Developed by Codemasters, it offers a realistic and immersive racing experience with all the official teams, drivers, and circuits. Players can compete in the full F1 season, participate in online multiplayer races, or create their own custom championships. Changing over to F1 24, the 5070 Ti comes in punching, now sitting just 4% slower than the RTX 5080 and 2% above the 4080 SUPER, though that does put us into margin of error territory. That aside, we do see 15% more performance than the 4070 Ti SUPER, 16% more than the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, and 63% more than the 3070 Ti, though when we’re talking 200 FPS or higher, it’s nothing you’d notice in-game anyway. Changing over to F1 24, the 5070 Ti comes in punching, now sitting just 4% slower than the RTX 5080 and 2% above the 4080 SUPER, though that does put us into the margin of error territory. That aside, we do see 15% more performance than the 4070 Ti SUPER, 16% more than the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, and 63% more than the 3070 Ti, though when we’re talking 200 FPS or higher, it’s nothing you’d notice in-game anyway. Starfield Starfield is a highly anticipated space exploration role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It offers a vast and immersive galaxy to explore, with countless planets, star systems, and alien civilizations to discover. Players can create their own custom character and embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of the universe, completing missions, engaging in space combat, and making choices that shape their destiny. Lastly, in Starfield at 1440p, the RTX 4080 again pushes ahead, as the 5070 Ti falls 6% behind, though that’s enough to give us a margin of error 4% lead over the 4070 Ti SUPER, a stronger, but still not groundbreaking, 6% lead over the 4070 Ti, and a 60% uplift over the RTX 3070 Ti, so not the strongest increases we’ve seen across games. At 4K, it’s a similar story, with the new Blackwell-based GPU slotting in 5% behind the RTX 4080, while still warranting a small but modest 7% lead over the 4070 Ti SUPER, a better, yet still not amazing, 12% lead over the 4070 Ti, and packs 70% more performance than the ageing 3070 Ti. Overall Average FPS Results are added together and then averaged out for each graphics card at each resolution to give you an overall picture of their relative performance. So, some strong increases generation to generation in places, while other titles didn’t give us anything above single-digit performance uplifts, though the best way to see what that means across all of our games is to look at the overall averages. Here, at 1080p, we evidently have some bottlenecks, though that aside, we find the 5070 Ti coming in faster than the RTX 4080 by less than 1%, so nothing really in it, though that’s a good sign, especially given their launch prices. When looking at generational uplift, the 5070 Ti only comes in 5% faster than the 4070 Ti SUPER and 7% faster than the 4070 Ti non-SUPER. When seeing how things compare to the 3070 Ti, there’s a 46% uplift overall, but there’s a lot more to the story as we increase the resolution. When moving up to 1440p and looking at the RTX 4080, we’re pretty evenly matched, though we do see slightly better low figures on the 5070 Ti in comparison. The 5070 Ti now comes in 8% faster than the 4070 Ti SUPER and 11% faster than the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, along with holding a 60% increase over the Ampere-based RTX 3070 Ti, so some increases, but nothing groundbreaking. One thing I do want to mention here is our 4080 SUPER results are swayed somewhat by CS2, as if we remove it, we can see things change quite dramatically, and now the 5070 Ti sits nestled between the RTX 4080 and 4080 SUPER, which is where I’d honestly expect it to be, given its price point and specs. Then at 4K, again, the 5070 Ti is pretty evenly matched with the RTX 4080, separated in the averages and the lows, so swings and roundabouts. This does mean that the 5070 Ti now sits 11% ahead of the 4070 Ti SUPER, 18% ahead of the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, and 68% ahead of the RTX 3070 Ti. Again, omitting CS2 from the averages does have an effect, which again puts the 5070 Ti just below the 4080 SUPER, but above the RTX 4080, which, for a card that is meant to be $749, is a good place to be. 3DMark Port Royal 3DMark Port Royal is a benchmarking tool specifically designed to measure the ray tracing performance of graphics cards. As the world's first dedicated real-time ray tracing benchmark for gamers, it provides a realistic and practical example of what to expect from ray tracing in games. As we move over to ray tracing performance, we turn to Port Royal as a synthetic test to ensure that performance aligns, and things are looking promising overall. The uplift from the 4070 Ti is strong at 30%, though the more impressive number comes from the increase from its Ampere predecessor. The new 5070 Ti boasts 101% more performance, placing it well aligned with the RTX 4080 SUPER, a card that launched at a 33% higher price point. Ray Tracing Alan Wake 2 Alan Wake II pushes the boundaries of visual fidelity with its ambitious implementation of "full ray tracing," also known as path tracing. This means ray tracing handles all lighting, reflections, and shadows, creating a more realistic and immersive environment. The game features ray-traced direct lighting for accurate and dynamic shadows, ray-traced indirect lighting for realistic bounced light, ray-traced reflections on surfaces like water and glass, and ray-traced transparency for convincing interaction with transparent objects. Booting back into Alan Wake II, but now with ray tracing set to high and upscaling set to balanced, and at 1440p, the 5070 Ti lags 8% behind the RTX 4080, though it does deliver fairly strong low figures in comparison. It also provides a margin of error improvement of 4% over the 4070 Ti and an 8% lead over the 4070 Ti SUPER. Retesting garnered the same result, so there are some slightly odd results for the 4070 Ti SUPER here, but at such small margins, there is not really much in it anyway. What is worth discussing, though, is the huge uplift in ray tracing performance over the 3070 Ti, to the tune of 206%. However, that may be more of a testament to how far behind the Ampere GPU is, rather than how far ahead the Blackwell-based 5070 Ti is. It is the same again as we move up to 4K. The 4070 Ti and the SUPER variant are separated by just 3 FPS, and retesting gave us the same result, so perhaps our Ti model is just that good, and our SUPER card is not. Either way, our 5070 Ti sits just 1 FPS higher than the 4070 Ti, which is a bit of a moot point. Again, though, we see a strong 152% lead over the RTX 3070 Ti, so those looking to upgrade for more ray tracing performance are in for a treat. Ray Tracing Black Myth Wukong Black Myth Wukong is set to be a visual tour-de-force, thanks to its implementation of full ray tracing, also known as path tracing. This means ray tracing is used to render all lighting, reflections, and shadows within its fantastical world. Ray-traced reflections enhance the serene beauty of water features and the shine of polished surfaces, while ray-traced shadows add depth and realism to every scene. Ray-traced indirect lighting allows light to bounce naturally, creating a more believable environment. Even the game's particle effects, often a challenge for ray tracing, are rendered with impressive accuracy. Black Myth: Wukong, with ray tracing set to medium, now has the 5070 Ti coming in 2% faster than the RTX 4080, but for the sake of margin of error, we would classify that as identical. Our 4070 Ti-based cards have seemingly sorted themselves out now, as the Ti SUPER comes in higher, and now our 5070 Ti packs 13% more frames. Compared to the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, we now have a healthy 24% faster performance, and this, again, gives us a strong lead over the 3070 Ti of 132%. At 4K, we are now matching the performance levels of the RTX 4080, though we do have a slight uptake in the 1% lows. This still means that we see a 14% increase in frames over the 4070 Ti SUPER, and a more impressive 39% over the non-SUPER card. When compared to the 3070 Ti, we now have a card that is 150% faster, though at any of these frame rates, upscaling is needed, or a serious look at the quality settings to bring performance back in line. Ray Tracing Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberpunk 2077 was already a visually impressive game, but the implementation of "Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode" takes things to a whole new level. This mode utilises path tracing, a form of full ray tracing, to render all lighting, reflections, and shadows with exceptional accuracy. This means every neon sign, streetlamp, headlight, and screen in Night City contributes to the illumination of the environment, creating a truly breathtaking and immersive experience. Ray-traced reflections bring the city's rain-slicked streets and glass skyscrapers to life, while ray-traced shadows add depth and realism to every scene. In Cyberpunk at 1440p, the 5070 Ti sits a margin of error 4% behind the RTX 4080 while also packing 13% more performance than both the 4070 Ti and 4070 Ti SUPER, which both come in identically at 40 FPS, with just a single frame separating them in the lows. The increase in performance from the 3070 Ti, which now sees 181% more frames, does mean we have gone from frankly unplayable to something that at least gives us scope to dial in the settings or utilise upscaling, including frame generation. At 4K, the frame rates drop dramatically, and there is not really much to discuss at such low-performance levels. It is nice to see the 5070 Ti matching the RTX 4080 in the averages and giving us 16% more performance than the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, along with 38% more than the RTX 4070 Ti non-SUPER. Though the most impressive thing is how poorly the 3070 Ti performed here, which, in turn, gives us a 2100% increase over the Ampere GPU. If only every result was like that, but sadly, this is an anomaly and should be treated as such. Ray Tracing F1 24 F1 24 brings the thrill of Formula 1 racing to life with its implementation of ray tracing, adding a new layer of realism to the on-track action. Ray-traced reflections accurately capture the gleaming surfaces of the cars and the vibrant colours of the race tracks, while ray-traced shadows add depth and detail to every scene. The introduction of ray-traced ambient occlusion further enhances the visual fidelity, providing more realistic and nuanced shading. Even the crowds in the grandstands benefit from ray tracing, with more detailed and dynamic lighting. At 4K, the frame rates drop dramatically, and there is not really much to discuss at such low performance levels. It is nice to see the 5070 Ti matching the RTX 4080 in the averages and giving us 16% more performance than the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, along with 38% more than the RTX 4070 Ti non-SUPER. Though the most impressive thing is how poorly the 3070 Ti performed here, which, in turn, gives us a 2100% increase over the Ampere GPU. If only every result was like that, but sadly, this is an anomaly and should be treated as such. As we move up to 4K, the 5070 Ti now pushes ahead of the RTX 4080, by a margin of error 3%, and, again, comes in with much stronger low figures to boot. This also means we now pack 17% more performance over the 4070 Ti SUPER, 26% more than the 4070 Ti, and 97% more than the 3070 Ti, so, again, if you are looking to skip a generation, there is some good, strong performance on the table. Ray Tracing Overall Average FPS Results are added together and then averaged out for each graphics card at each resolution to give you an overall picture of their relative performance. What this means for overall averages is that, at 1080p, it is a similar story to what we saw with ray tracing disabled, as the 5070 Ti is pretty evenly matched compared to the RTX 4080. It falls behind in the averages but makes up for it in the lows, and this, again, puts it 10% ahead of the 4070 Ti SUPER, 12% ahead of the 4070 Ti non-SUPER, and 97% ahead of the 3070 Ti, showing a much bigger jump in ray tracing performance compared to that generation of cards. As we move to 1440p, the fight with the RTX 4080 is still on, as the 5070 Ti, again, falls just behind in the averages but makes up for it in the lows. Compared to the 4070 Ti, we see an 11% uplift, along with a 14% increase over the 4070 Ti non-SUPER. The bigger uplift comes when looking at the 3070 Ti, as we now have a 116% increase in performance just by skipping a generation and moving directly to the 5070 Ti. Then at 4K, the 5070 Ti does fall into somewhat unplayable levels, depending on the games you are playing, though it still holds a strong position against the RTX 4080 and comes in 13% faster than the 4070 Ti SUPER and 19% better than the 4070 Ti non-SUPER. Lastly, looking at how things stack up with the 3070 Ti, we are now packing 144% more performance overall, showing that the latest ray tracing performance is much stronger compared to Ampere, but does not hold anything substantial when sizing up against the last generation. Upscaling Alan Wake II Alan Wake II is a survival horror game and the long-awaited sequel to Remedy Entertainment’s cult classic, Alan Wake. This time, the story takes a darker turn, delving deeper into the psychological and supernatural elements that made the original so compelling. Players can expect a chilling atmosphere, intense combat encounters, and a mind-bending narrative that will keep them on the edge of their seats. Upscaling Next up, I want to examine upscaling. A 50-series card includes multi-frame generation technology, and I wanted to see its effect on performance, especially in games where frame rates were lower due to maximising quality presets and overall settings. I used Alan Wake II to assess the performance uplift. Native performance yielded 48 FPS. Enabling DLSS provided a 94% frame rate increase and reduced latency by over 40%. Enabling multi-frame generation at x2, x3, and x4 showed steady performance increases, reaching 245 frames per second, all with lower latency. The same trend occurred with ray tracing enabled. Latency was higher due to ray tracing, but performance increased from an unplayable 21 FPS at native to 158 FPS on the highest mode. This is a 652% frame increase, with a 50ms latency reduction, making the game playable at higher settings. Cyberpunk showed a similar pattern, with options for CNN or Transformer models. Increasing the model to x2, x3, and x4 increased frame rates. While the most aggressive model introduced more latency, it was still lower than native latency. The Transformer model had slightly lower frame rates than CNN at the same settings, but CNN typically offered lower visual quality. Gamers can choose their preferred trade-off. With ray tracing enabled, latency increased, with 23 FPS at native and 88ms latency. Performance increased dramatically, and latency halved. The x4 mode in both CNN and Transformer models saw latency increase to 60ms, but this was still lower than native while providing up to a 600% performance increase. Upscaling involves three factors: frame rate performance, latency, and visuals. While performance and latency have been covered, visuals are also crucial. For a more in-depth visual analysis, please see our other 50-series content. Here, I will compare native and x4 modes. Differences were surprisingly small. Finer details, like rubbish on the floor, showed a slight clarity loss with frame generation, but not noticeable during gameplay. The light on Alan Wake's back seemed to fade quicker with frame generation, possibly affecting ray tracing calculations, presumably due to the lower resolution with DLSS enabled. In Cyberpunk, differences at this resolution were minimal. Some detail loss was apparent on distant objects, such as smoother skin on a merchant. Fog appeared slightly thicker with frame generation, possibly due to DLSS's handling of transparency. Overall, differences were hard to detect, but this comparison does not account for frame generation artefacts, which are noticeable during camera movement; this issue is well-documented online. Power & Temperatures Regarding temperatures, power, fan speed, and sustained GPU clocks, I used F1 24 on an hour-long loop to assess the 5070 Ti. While this test largely reflects the Ventus 3X cooler's performance, MSI's Ventus cooler, while good, is used on an MSRP-based card. Premium cards will perform better. After an hour in F1 24, GPU and memory junction temperatures averaged around 64 degrees. The memory junction temperature fluctuated slightly, by about 1 degree. This allowed a sustained boost level averaging around 2677MHz, with one instance above 2700MHz. Fan speed remained consistent at just under 1700 RPM, inaudible over the system's other fans. The card, with a 300W TDP, remained under this limit, averaging around 275W, peaking at 280W and dipping to 260W. Cost Per Frame MSRP To summarise, cost per frame is always a key metric, but it's difficult with an unreleased product's MSRP. While a price might be stated, it's not guaranteed. Therefore, both MSRP and retail prices are considered. At 1440p and MSRP, the 5070 Ti performs well, at $3.85 per frame, surpassed only by the RTX 4070 SUPER and AMD's RX 7900 GRE. This is positive compared to the 4070 Ti SUPER at $4.42 per frame and the non-SUPER at $4.58, though retail prices will vary. At 4K and MSRP, the 5070 Ti performs even better, despite the cost per frame increasing to $6.02. It's one of the best value cards at MSRP, second only to the RX 7900 GRE. However, retail price is the most important metric. Cost Per Frame Selling Price Considering typical retail prices, the picture changes slightly. The 5070 Ti is included at both its $749 MSRP and the $899 listed by MicroCenter and BestBuy, for a more realistic view. At 1440p, even at the inflated price, the 5070 Ti looks decent, especially considering the early adopter tax. Performance should improve over time, though much depends on other GPUs' price adjustments as newer cards are released, which depends on availability. At 4K, the situation is similar. The cost per frame increases, but the 5070 Ti's value is now lower than the RX 7900 GRE, which is at $6.09 and has only seen a small 3% price increase since launch. This makes analysis difficult due to fluctuating costs and the availability of new cards. Some gamers will always want to buy the latest release, regardless of price. How Much Does it Cost? The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti launches today with an MSRP of just £749, a far cry from the eye-watering prices of the flagship cards that are £2000-2500, and frankly, already above that due to demand and stock battles. While I'm certain we'll see prices above this MSRP, especially with custom cards from AIBs, it's still welcoming to see sub £1000 cards that offer some strong upgrade options for those on older generation GPUs. Overview As always, that’s a lot of areas to go through, from rasterisation to ray tracing, to upscaling, to cost and everything in between. So, let's break things down into the important parts, which I think mainly revolve around people looking to upgrade to this card. Old Vs New First and foremost, the RTX 5070 Ti is a big step up for those still on an RTX 3070 Ti, in some cases offering a massive 60–70% performance uplift in rasterisation and over 100% in ray tracing, making it one of the most substantial generational jumps we’ve seen for this class of GPU. More importantly, it doubles the VRAM to 16GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus, solving one of the biggest complaints about the 3070 Ti’s limited 8GB frame buffer, which has clearly started to show its age in modern titles. Compared to the RTX 4070 Ti and 4070 Ti SUPER, the 5070 Ti still brings noticeable improvements, but the margins aren’t as dramatic. With around 17% uplifts over the 4070 Ti and around 9% over the 4070 Ti SUPER, it doesn’t necessarily make those cards obsolete, but it does offer a meaningful performance-per-pound advantage—especially if you skipped the 40 series and are looking for the best bang for your buck in the 70-class segment. Though, as mentioned, pricing is a bit out of whack anyway, and that’s a sore subject. Added Value The pricing should have made the 5070 Ti a killer option, and at the announced MSRP of £749, this GPU easily justifies itself, slotting in close to the 4080 series in performance while staying significantly cheaper. It also comes with NVIDIA’s latest technologies like DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation (MFG), which dramatically improves performance and, along with Reflex, reduces latency, but only in supported titles. Though you could argue that’s better than what the competition are doing right now by turning unplayable frame rates at 4K with ray tracing into something smooth and responsive, all while maintaining lower latency than native rendering. Now, the big problem is that MSRP pricing never lasts, and NVIDIA’s recent track record with the 5080 and 5090 tells us that the 5070 Ti is unlikely to be found at £749 for long, if at all. We’ve already seen retailers listing it at £899, which puts it in a very different competitive position. If it lands closer to £899–£999, suddenly the 4080 series and AMD’s 9000 series cards become much more attractive alternatives. But even then, I, like many others, am frustrated. It seems long gone are the days where a 70 Ti class would cost you £599 like the 3070 Ti, and you’d get it for that price. That really is the frustrating part, as the 5070 Ti is a great GPU. It has strong generational performance if you’re willing to skip a generation, excellent ray tracing, if you’re willing to skip a generation, and better upscaling capabilities, but if NVIDIA adds DLSS 4 to the 40 series, then again, if you skip a generation. Should I Buy One? Overall, its value depends entirely on real-world pricing. If it stays close to MSRP, it’s a good, solid upgrade for those moving from the 3070 Ti or even a 4070 Ti user looking for extra power without stepping into flagship pricing and wanting to harness the latest tech. But if inflated pricing and scalping take hold, it loses its edge, making it a tougher sell in an already crowded GPU market. And with AMD’s 9000 series on the horizon, NVIDIA and their partners, through both AIBs and retail, may need to do some rethinking. For now, the RTX 5070 Ti delivers on its promise of being a strong next-gen option, and if you can get it at MSRP, it's a solid buy. But as we’ve seen before, that’s a big “if”, and it’s something we’ll be watching closely in the coming weeks. Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
