After privileged North American users were blessed with the system back in May, the people of Europe have finally been afforded the opportunity to get their hands on the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV. Available now in the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia, the SHIELD Android TV box is available in 16GB (standard) and 50GB (SHIELD Pro) models, plus microSD and USB 3.0 slots for expanding its storage capacity.
The SHIELD Android TV box boasts a Tegra X1 processor which, according to NVIDIA, “delivers graphics performance that’s 3x faster the new (2015) Apple TV, 25x faster than Roku 3, and 4x faster than the new (2015) Fire TV.” The box can stream 4K video from Netflix and YouTube – offering 10-bit colour and Dolby 7.1 surround sound – while also supporting Kodi (the new name for XBMC) and popular media sharing app Plex. Included in the bundle is the SHIELD wireless game controller, which supports voice commands and connects via WiFi Direct and offers 40 hours of gameplay from a single charge.
As well as being a streaming media player, the Android TV box, like its other SHIELD siblings, doubles as gaming system, supporting NVIDIA’s new GeForce Now game streaming platform.
The NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV is priced £150 for the standard model, while the Pro version costs £230.
