DirectX 12 is an incredible API, it can provide PC gamers with huge improvements in terms of performance, making better use of the CPU and GPU vs DX11, or at least it would if more developers we’re using it correctly. Quantum Break is just the latest example of this, as it seems Steam users with Nvidia graphics hardware are getting around 30% better performance vs the Windows 10 version which uses DX12.
It’s not a big issue in terms of graphics, as both DX11 and DX12 versions are visually identical, it’s about how the backend works. Remedy did state that they were more comfortable with the DX11 API and that’s why the focused on making the Steam version better optimised because they could do so more easily. However, if a DX12 version was already in the world, why didn’t the make that their primary focus given that the API is backwards compatible?
Check out the videos below comparing the performance of each API. For now, if you’re looking to get the game PC and you have Nvidia hardware, Steam would be the way to go.
