NZXT Cryo E40 Notebook Cooler Review

From the top of the Cryo E40 we see a very simple yet pleasing design. Some things are immediately obvious from the top, firstly the little tab above the NZXT logo. This allows you to remove the aluminium mesh cover to get access to the fans which you can see underneath. The fact it is made of aluminium is significant, this allows the fans to cling to it with the magnets that mean you can place those fans anywhere you’d like. You can also see two well placed rubber strips which stop notebooks from slipping off the cooler since the cooler is at a slight angle.

We next removed the aluminium mesh cover to analyse it more closely. As you can see the two 80mm fans intake from the bottom and push air upwards towards to the notebook mounted on top. Both these 80mm fans are powered by a single USB cable. This does mean that you will lose one USB port on your notebook. It is also interesting to see screws for the rubber mounts, perhaps suggesting you can remove these if you’d like – if for example your notebook already has sufficient rubber grips on and these ones just get in the way.

From the bottom of the Cryo E40 there is a clear view of the intake holes for the fans to draw up cool air from  You can also see two cable routing holes at the far left and far right of the notebook cooler depending on where you want to plug your USB in on your notebook.  Rubber feet are provided to stop the cooler from slipping on hard surface. There is also manufacture information on the barcode sticker for any enquires you might have about RMA issues.

The fans come with 4 magnets attached in each corner. The cables and fans are entirely black which is great for the simple clean aesthetic that the product gives. From where the two fan cables merge the cable is approximately 50cm in length with the coiled part fully compressed. You can get an extra 20cm or so in length (should you need it) by stretching the coiled part of the cable. The USB connector is USB 2.0 and will run in USB 1.1/2.0/3.0 if enough power is provided. Although, the fans need very little power so the vast majority of notebooks should support this with absolutely no issues.
