Obsidian Confirms It Used No Generative AI in The Outer Worlds 2 or Any of Its Recent Games
In an interview, the developers at Obsidian Entertainment revealed that they did not use generative AI in The Outer Worlds 2, or in any of their other games. They indicated that the studio deliberately kept its distance from that technology.
A Clear Decision from the Studio
When asked whether they had used artificial intelligence for writing, design director Josh Sawyer answered no, and creative director Leonard Boyarsky was even sharper, saying that they haven’t used it at all.
Boyarsky recalled that years ago he had expressed a positive view of the possibilities offered by AI in script-writing, but now he has changed his mind, adding that if he could he would slap his former self in the face for having been so optimistic.
Why Obsidian’s Position Stands Out
Obsidian’s statements make the significant work the development team has done in recent years even more interesting, especially considering that the studio released not only The Outer Worlds 2 but also Avowed and Grounded 2 in 2025.
In fact, Obsidian’s position is somewhat contrarian compared with many other studios, which are increasingly intent on implementing the use of AI — especially to handle work that demands lots of time and effort from human developers, though often these practices also verge into cost-saving territory.
In other news, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that AI would not be able to create a game like GTA VI because AI models inherently lack true human creativity.
