Oculus Cuts Rift Prices

The world of VR seems interesting, but you have to pay a high price to participate in it. There is the fact that you need quite a powerful PC and then there is the VR gears price. The latter got a little better as Oculus announced a price cut on their VR headset, Rift, and the Touch controllers.

The initial launch is past us and both the software and hardware has matured. That also means that the production costs have gone down, most likely, and that might be why Facebook is slashing some of the prices on their Oculus parts.

Both the Oculus Rift headset and the pair of Touch controllers each got a $100 cut which makes the complete setup $200 cheaper than it previously was. The headset is down to $500 from $600 and a pair of Touch controllers will cost $100 now instead of the previous cost of $200.

“Less expensive hardware means more people have more money to spend on content and more people in general come in,” said Jason Rubin, the company’s head of VR content, in an interview with UploadVR. “This is 101 for expanding your ecosystem.”

A price cut is great for every consumer unless you just bought one at the old and higher price. Jason Rubin called the new pricing “pretty compelling” and said that there won’t be another price drop anytime soon. “This is the kind of thing you look at every six months to a year” [sic] – and it has been a year since its official launch.

Those who purchased Touch in the last 30 days can get $50 in Oculus store credit to ease the blow of the price drop. That might soften the blow a bit for those, but for everyone else, it’s a win situation.

Are you already part of the VR world or is it still a gimmick in your mind? Or perhaps it was just a too expensive feature? If so, does this price cut make the Oculus VR system more interesting for you? Let us know in our comment sections.
