After suggesting that the name for its new Android version will start with the letter “M”, the rumors regarding the name have been abundant. Some thought that it would be “Macadamia”, while others were sure that it would be “M&M”. However, the name of Android 6.0 will actually be “Marshmallow”, which is why Google has recently installed a large statue of an Android mascot holding a marshmallow at its Mountain View headquarters. It’s not at all uncommon for Google to name its Android versions alphabetically after tasty treats. Fine examples include Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop.
The naming announcement came just in time because the final Android 6.0 SDK is actually available to download right now through Android Studio’s SDK Manager. Some Nexus gadgets such as the Nexus Player, Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 received updated developer preview system images in order to make testing easier. It’s worth keeping in mind that even though the new SDK is in its final version, the system images that we mentioned before are considered developer previews, which means that they should not be regarded as consumer products.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow will launch this fall, and it will surely include a plethora of new features and improvements.
