It’s no big secret that Overwatch is an incredibly popular game, as its Beta phase alone drew in several million players. However, even though it’s sometimes difficult to find out exactly how successful some online-based games really are, it looks like Blizzard is much more forthcoming with this information, as it has recently unveiled that more than 7 million people are playing Overwatch. That’s a lot! Moreover, it looks like gamers have logged in more than 119 million hours combined, which means that Overwatch enjoyed one of the most successful launches in the world. CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime, has stated the following:
“Over the months and weeks leading up to release we saw a lot of love and support for Overwatch—from Blizzard gamers, FPS fans, and people who’d never picked up a game like this before—and we’re very grateful for everyone’s incredible passion and enthusiasm. We poured a lot of effort into creating a game—and a new universe—that anyone could enjoy. We’re ecstatic to have had such a successful launch, and we’re looking forward to all of the fun, competition, and new content still to come.”
The fact that this game runs quite well even on lower-end hardware definitely helped with its overall success, but some still consider Overwatch to be an overpriced title, particularly since it has no single-player campaign. Still, Blizzard will likely add more heroes, maps and maybe even game modes as time goes by, especially if they want to keep the momentum going.
