Pacific Rim, a film inspired the hit anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, featuring mankind fighting for its survival in giant mechs called Jaegers in response to the threat of giant aliens. The hit film was released several years ago now and was directed by Guillermo del Toro, however, it may seem like its sequel has hit a monster even bigger than the ones it shows on screen.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Pacific Rim 2, set for release in August 2017 and was scheduled to start filming in November, has halted indefinitely. In most cases it tends to be that large films like this may be delayed, but more and more in recent years, this is signs of bigger troubles and struggles, which often lead to the film never making it to your local cinema.
The initial rumours for the budget stood at around $190 million, a little over Jurassic Worlds $150 but still short of films like the Avengers: Age of Ultron which had a whopping $250 million budget. The original film didn’t do great taking in only $101 million at the box office, a nice figure that was only just over half of the films development costings. The success comes from Legend noticing how much it succeeded in China, with support gathering not only for a second film but the second was rumoured to be building up towards a third.
Were you excited about Pacific Rim 2? How did you find the first film? Would you see Pacific Rim 2 in the cinema or would it be a DVD buy several months later?
