Papers, Please – A Short Film Is Released Based On The Game

Papers, Please – The Movie

One of the more popular indie games in recent years has been ‘Papers, Please‘. Putting you in the fictional role of an Eastern European border control officer, on the surface, it doesn’t sound that fun. It is, however, a deceptively tense game of fact-checking.

In the game, as the border officer, you must decide who is and who is not allowed to enter your country. To do this you are provided with documentation and a set of ever-changing rules. In addition, you must scrutinize the documentation for any discrepancies. This can be as simple as names not matching, dates not being correct or even as far as people not being the correct gender.

The game has an exceptionally high rating on Steam, and it’s for good reason. If at this point you are interested, you can check it out here.

Turning this into a film!

While the premise of the game might sound weird, the fact that a film has been made about it might, therefore, sound even crazier. Despite that, a film has been made and in truth, it’s one of the best game to film adaptations I’ve seen. In addition, at only 10 minutes in length, I daresay most could find the time to give it a watch.

It completely captures the drab ethos of the game and the pressure placed on the protagonist to do a job efficiently or face being sent to the Gulag.

The film itself has been recorded with Russian dialogue, which ironically addresses the elephant in the room regarding the game. It is, however, available in over 22 languages in subtitles. As such, I doubt that there are many of you out there that couldn’t watch and enjoy this.

Like the game, the film concentrates on the consequences of pathos. While you may feel bad for the people who want to enter your country, allowing them in, when not permitted, could have serious repercussions for you and your family. You must, therefore, make your decisions carefully.

You can watch the film in full above and afterward, I daresay you might be tempted to give the game a go.

What do you think? Did you play ‘Papers, Please’? Did you enjoy it? In addition, surprised at the film? – Let us know in the comments! Oh, and Glory to Arstotzka!
