CES2018 Patriot Viper 2.5" SATA

Patriot didn’t just bring the Viper M.2 NVMe SSD to CES 2018, they also brought their Viper 2.5-Inch SATA SSD with them. The naming might be a little confusing as there is a Viper NVMe and a Viper SATA drive now, but the form factors make them easily identified.

Patriot Viper 2.5-Inch SATA SSD

The Viper 2.5-Inch SATA SSD is a classic drive, as you would expect it. The bus speed and performance in general sets limits, but it is still the main market. Everyone can install a 2.5-Inch drive in their system, whether it’s portable or stationary. The drive is run by a Phison controller, the Phison S12.

Capacity wise, you get a lot of options here. It starts at 256GB and goes over 512GB and 1TB to the biggest capacity, 2TB. That should be plenty of storage space for your entire gaming library, for example.

Performance

As I mentioned above, there are natural limitations when we talk performance on a SATA drive. That said, the speeds aren’t bad and they are a huge step up from those who are rocking mechanical hard disk drives. We get a sequential speed rating of up to 550MB/s when reading and 530MB/s when writing.

The random performance is rated at 100K IOPS when reading and 90K IOPS when writing. That’s actually quite impressive for a SATA drive and I’m sure it will become popular among gamers. Patriot really gets everything there is to get out of the interface.

Pricing and Availability

The Viper 2.5-Inch SATA SSD isn’t listed yet and we do currently not know when it will become available. However, we’ll stay on the ball and try to find out. Naturally, we’ll also try to secure a review sample. With a performance and capacity rating like the Viper has, we just have to test it ourselves.
