Patriot Viper 3 16GB 2400MHz Memory Kit Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

The Patriot Viper 3 PV316G240C0KBL 16GB (2 x 8GB) memory kit is retailing for £170.33 / £170.02  in the UK. In the USA it is selling for around $210 / $195.

Conclusions

It is difficult to draw significant conclusions on on the Patriot Viper 3 16GB 2400MHz kit because there is a lack of availability, and availability that does tend to exist is from small retailers or at seemingly uncompetitive prices. In the UK £170 is hardly an inspiring price when 16GB 2400MHz kits can be had for £135-155. In the USA $195-210 is hardly inspiring when similar size and frequency kits can be had for $150-185. I appreciate that Patriot are offering a lifetime warranty, and in my books that definitely justifies a premium, but when other vendors also offering a lifetime warranty on similar kits are charging 10-30% less I think Patriot need to revise their pricing strategy.

Pricing aside the Patriot Viper 3 16GB 2400MHz kit is a decent kit. Performance is bang on the money for its rated speed and timings and the modules look the part so we can have no complaints there. The lifetime warranty is also a nice touch. Patriot are making the Viper 16GB kit available in red, green, blue and black which is a wise decision to make their kits stand out from the crowd a bit, and appeal to the system builder who likes to match up and colour theme their system.

However, when there is so little to get excited about in a RAM kit Patriot certainly aren’t doing me any favours with this particular kit. Overclocking didn’t really happen and it mainly decreased performance, that combined with the fact Patriot are shipping these kits with green PCBs and I’m not overly impressed. There is certainly no stand-out reason not to buy this memory kit, other than the price, so I’d say definitely pick this kit up if you can score a good deal on it, something in the region of £155~$175 would be a worthwhile buying price.

Pros

  • Available in range of colours
  • High end performance
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Limited overclocking headroom
  • Expensive relative to competition
  • Green PCB

“Patriot’s Viper 3 16GB 2400MHz memory kit is a solid memory kit that offers excellent performance. The price is currently too high to be award-worthy but the novelty of a variety of colour options and the peace of mind of a lifetime warranty mean the Patriot Viper 3 16GB 2400MHz kit is certainly worth considering.”

Thank you to Patriot for providing this review sample.
