PC Is by Far the Most Popular Platform for Developers, GDC Survey Shows
As is tradition, the Game Developers Conference has released the results of its annual survey on platform preferences among developers. Once again, PC stands out as the most popular platform by a wide margin, while Xbox ranks last among the major consoles.
The survey is based on a relatively limited sample, as it includes only part of the conference attendees. However, with 2,300 developers interviewed, the results still offer a meaningful snapshot of the current state of game development.
For PC, this comes as a confirmation rather than a surprise. The platform has been the preferred choice for developers for years now, but what stands out is the large gap separating it from all other platforms.
PC Dominates Developer Interest

The survey was based on a simple but key question: “Which platform(s) most interest you as a developer right now?” Since it targets industry professionals, it provides a clear picture of current development priorities.
According to the results, 80% of respondents selected PC, placing it far ahead of every other option. The next most popular platforms are PlayStation 5 and Steam Deck, tied at around 40%.
Close behind them is Nintendo Switch 2, chosen by 39% of developers. In contrast, Xbox Series X|S lags significantly behind at 20%, only slightly ahead of mobile platforms such as Android and iOS.
Beyond the main platforms, the survey also included options such as tabletop games, VR/AR/MR, and subscription services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Cloud Gaming. These categories saw even lower interest, though it is not entirely clear how some developers interpreted these choices.
Overall, the results highlight a clear trend: PC development interest is more than double that of the most popular consoles, namely PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Those consoles, in turn, attract roughly twice as much interest as Xbox Series X|S.
