Phil Spencer Confirms: Starfield’s Xbox Exclusivity Is Not Permanent

Phil Spencer has made a clear statement about Starfield’s exclusivity, responding with a firm “no” when asked if the game could be considered an indefinite Xbox exclusive. This aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing policy regarding Xbox Game Studios titles, a stance that has been evident for months.

Starfield’s Status as an Xbox Console Exclusive

Starfield remains an Xbox console exclusive, available only on Xbox and PC. While Spencer avoided directly saying the game would come to other platforms, his comments strongly suggest that Microsoft has no plans to expand Starfield’s availability.

In a recent interview with Destin Legarie, the question was asked: “Can you solidify that Starfield is staying put for the time being?” Spencer replied, “No.” He elaborated that Microsoft’s approach is not about building barriers or making its games inaccessible to other platforms. He emphasized, “There is no reason for me to put a ring fence around any game and say this game will not go to a place that it would find players, where it would have business success for us.”

Microsoft’s Strategy

Spencer highlighted Microsoft’s broader strategy, explaining that their business model is focused on making their games widely available. Game Pass plays a significant role in this approach, but restricting games to certain platforms is not part of their vision. “We’ve realized we can drive a better business, allowing us to invest in a great lineup of games. Keeping games off other platforms, that’s not a path for us. It doesn’t work for us.” he explained.

This perspective connects to other recent statements from Spencer, such as his reasoning behind purchasing an Xbox without relying on exclusives and Microsoft’s plans to support Nintendo Switch 2 with its games. These comments further underline Microsoft’s philosophy of accessibility and inclusivity for its gaming audience.
