Pioneer Launches XS02 Portable SSD

When I say Pioneer, you most likely think of stereo equipment or Blu-Ray drives, but the company makes a lot of other things. That shows in their recently released USB Type-C range which includes a portable SSD. The new portable Pioneer SSD is the XS02 and it is a budget oriented drive.

Pioneer added both a Type-C interface and a USB 3.1 Gen.2 controller to the XS02 portable SSD. The new connector allows for an easy connection without the triple-turn we all know from the old Type-A connector. The latest inteface makes sure that we don’t run into any performance bottlenecks.

Speaking of performance, we might as well get right to it. It isn’t spectacular, but it’s still a lot better than a portable HDD. The XS02 is rated for 480MB/s when reading and 400MB/s when writing. There are two capacity options at your disposal which are in 120GB and 240GB.

What About the Portability?

There are three main criterias to a portable storage solution, no matter which one it is. It has to be small enough not to bother you, it has to be light enought not to wear you down, and it has to be durable enough to stand up to the stress of traveling. Pioneer’s XS02 should deliver on all of these fronts, at least when compared to HDD solutions. It measures 65 by 45 by 10.5 millimetres and weights just 29.5 grammes. Durability is a natural given ability of SSDs. There are no moving parts as there are in HDDs, so there’s less that can be damaged.
