PlayStation Physical Game Production to Drop Just 10% by 2028, Sony Clarifies
The summer of 2026 could be remembered as the start of a major change for gamers. PlayStation is moving away from physical games as the gaming market continues to shift toward digital games. Many players were unhappy with this news, which also came with new details about the future of physical PlayStation games.
One of those details came from Dietmar Tanzer, head of Sony DADC, Sony’s disc production division.
Sony Clarifies PS5 Physical Game Production Will Drop by Only 10% by 2028
His comments were first understood to mean that production of physical games could fall to just 10% of current levels. This caused concern, especially as physical PS5 game sales are already struggling in the US. However, Tanzer’s comments had been misunderstood.
Brian Crecente, founder of Kotaku, has now shared some much-needed clarification with the gaming industry. “To clarify and avoid any misleading information: in that statement Dietmar anticipated an overall product volume decline by 10 percent, not a decline down to 10 percent,” a Sony DADC spokesperson said.
There will therefore continue to be new orders for physical media after these changes come into effect, contrary to what Sony’s statements may have led people to believe. The 10% drop refers to 2028, the year that will mark a new beginning for gaming.
