Sony has announced that it will stop producing PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028. The news was shared in a post on the official PlayStation Blog by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications.
From January 2028, PlayStation games will no longer be released on discs. Physical copies will still be sold in stores, but they will work differently. Similar to what is expected with Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year, the game box will only include a download code that players can redeem on the PlayStation Store.

Explaining the decision, Sid Shuman said:
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
The announcement also strongly suggests that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will be a digital-only console without a built-in disc drive. This decision is expected to spark debate among players, especially when it comes to backward compatibility with the current and previous PlayStation generations.
