Positive Steam Reviews Can Multiply Game Interest and Boost Sales
A new report from the marketing firm Gamesight has revealed that positive reviews on Steam can be more effective than traditional marketing campaigns when it comes to driving game sales. According to the study, improving a game’s Steam rating from “Mixed” to “Very Positive” can potentially triple the sales impact compared to a typical advertising effort.
Positive Reviews Have a Direct Impact on Conversion Rates
The report, titled Performance Marketing Playbook, compared the conversion rates of 30 premium games with their Steam review scores. The findings showed that every game with a conversion rate above 2% had over 80% positive reviews on Steam.
One of the examples mentioned was No Man’s Sky, which earned players’ trust over time through continuous updates and improvements.
Additionally, the study included data from a 21-month-long marketing campaign for an unnamed title. The analysis showed that conversion rates increased when the game’s review score improved — peaking at over 7% when it reached the “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating.
Listening to Players Is the Key to Success
According to Gamesight analyst Marlie Tandoc, consistent updates, bug fixes, and adding features requested by the community are the main drivers behind improved reviews. The anonymous game tracked by Gamesight followed the same pattern — its highest surge in positive reviews occurred right after a popular player-requested feature was added.
The takeaway is simple: developers should listen to their players. Although this advice might seem obvious, many studios still underestimate its importance.
However, there’s one notable exception to this rule — free-to-play games. Because they are accessible without cost, players tend to try them without relying on reviews.
Examples of successful titles that have benefited from improved reputation include No Man’s Sky, Helldivers 2, Total War: Warhammer III, and Cyberpunk 2077, all of which demonstrate how rebuilding trust through updates and player engagement can transform a game’s market performance.
