Pretec SDHC 32GB 433x Media Card Review

When purchasing a memory card and more importantly so by photographers, it is important that the card performs not only as it says on the packaging, but continues to perform in the long run. This is the sole reason why the vast majority of users stick to a well known and trusted brand – paying the higher prices. Now I’m not condoning the fact that they are right, after all I’m in exactly the same boat and wouldn’t necessarily buy a card by someone that I’ve not heard of and/or don’t know as well. This is where reviews come into play.

Putting the card through an extended period of consistent use is one of the few clear ways to bring up any flaws with the flash memory and as we have seen, the card just took it in its stride, albeit a little warm as one would expect after 6 hours of full on use. Even after this brutal test – one of the longest we’ve ever done, the cards read speeds were still just as good as we was expecting with very little drop in performance from claimed speeds.

I know that a number of photographers stick to lower capacity cards and I’m one of these, after all I’d rather have more low capacity cards and in the event that one fails, I’ve lost less valuable data, however, with improved technology and manufacturer testing, it appears that some of the flaws that we used to see a few years ago with larger cards have been ironed out. With the speeds that are on offer, this card also shapes up perfectly for the HD video recording market, where the larger capacity, the better.

Pricing wise, we find that the card slips right in line alongside its direct competitors with its price point for the capacity, speed and class coming in at around the £40 mark. Now whilst this may seem a lot, there are offering for slightly slower cards that are a little bit more expensive and this is down to brand names. Having used this card for a while, even after our testing suites in one of our cameras, we’re confident to keep on using it.
