PS5 Was the Best-Selling Console in the USA in March, But the Overall Hardware Market Continues to Decline
According to sales data from Circana, March 2025 showed a general decline in the hardware market in the USA. However, the PS5 continued to be the best-selling console during this period.
Overall, spending on gaming hardware dropped by 25% in March compared to the same time last year, reaching 286 million dollars. This is the lowest figure for a March month in the USA since 2019. This decline in hardware sales has been ongoing for several months, and experts believe it may change with the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June, which is expected to boost sales.
PS5 Continues to Lead Sales
Despite a 26% drop in spending compared to last year, the PS5 still ranks in first place both in terms of revenue and units sold. This follows the trend seen in recent months.
Xbox Series X|S comes in second place for both revenue and units sold, with a 9% decrease compared to March of the previous year. Nintendo Switch follows in third place, experiencing the biggest decline of 37%. This drop is understandable, considering the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Digital-Only Models Show Strong Sales
A noteworthy trend is that digital-only models now make up 75% of Xbox sales, mainly the Series S and the new Series X Digital edition. For PS5, digital-only models account for 50% of the sales during this period.
Estimates suggest that around 355,000 PS5 units, 160,000 Xbox Series X|S units, and 150,000 Nintendo Switch units were sold in March, though these figures are not official and should only be considered approximate.
