QNAP Quad-Core TS-x64U Rackmount NAS Announced

QNAP are well known for their NAS and storage products, both in the consumer market, and the enterprise markets and just about everything in between too. Today, they launched their new TS-x64U NAS, which comes in both 4-bay and 12-bay models. Of course, this is likely punching a little above the needs of your average at-home Plex server. However, with it supporting PCIe Gen 3 expandability, 2.5 GbE connectivity and 4K HDMI output, the TS-x64U enables not only installing a QM2 card for M.2 SSD caching or Edge TPU for AI image recognition but also convenient virtual machine display and smooth multimedia streaming. Or just a big f***ing Plex and a bunch of gaming host servers, if that’s totally your thing.

TS-x64U Rackmount NAS

The TS-x64U is powered by an Intel Celeron N5105/ N5095 quad-core 4-thread processor (burst up to 2.9 GHz) with an Intel AES-NI encryption engine and 4 GB DDR4 memory (upgradable to 16 GB dual channel). The TS-x64U has a PCIe Gen 3 slot allowing installing a 10GbE network card, a QM2 card for NVMe SSD caching or Qtier, or a Coral M.2 Accelerator for AI image recognition. The TS-x64U has two 2.5 GbE ports, two USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) ports that provide faster data transfer and backup. The TS-x64U’s storage capacity can be expanded by connecting TL and TR storage expansion enclosures.

Of course, you could use this at home, but it’s mostly targeted at some larger businesses and enthusiast users too. But in a sense, there’s not a lot it can’t do. I love that it has a built-in HDMI port though, which can make management a lot easier, or it literally could output to your media centre if you were so inclined.

“The TS-x64U adopts the latest QTS 5.0 operating system, and includes rich NAS home/business applications: HBS (Hybrid Backup Sync) realizes efficient local/remote/cloud backup jobs; Block-based snapshots make data protection and recovery easier and effectively mitigate the threats of ransomware; HybridMount provides cloud storage gateways that integrate private and public cloud storage and enable local caching; Virtualization Station and Container Station enables light virtualization applications; QVR Elite helps deploy a cutting-edge smart surveillance system; and KoiMeeter provides a complete cross-platform video meeting and wireless presentation solution. Home users will also enjoy the wide range of multimedia applications (including Plex ), streaming capabilities, and a built-in HDMI port, which allows them to enjoy their multimedia on their device of choice.” – QNAP
