Radeon RX 9070 XT Gets a Big Performance Boost with Latest Drivers, Closing the Gap to RX 7900 XTX
The Radeon RX 9070 XT is not more powerful than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX. It’s close, but the latter is still the more powerful card, especially under rasterization. So, has this changed with the release of AMD‘s latest drivers?
Tests conducted by Hardware Unboxed confirm a performance gain with the latest drivers compared to previous ones, with the team referring to it as “fine wine.”
Performance Changes in Popular Games
In Star Wars Jedi Survivor, there are no changes; the performance remains the same. However, in A Plague Tale: Requiem, the performance improves by 8% with the new drivers, matching the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. In Cyberpunk 2077, the performance increases by 4%, allowing the Radeon RX 9070 XT to outperform the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti.
In Dying Light 2, the performance remains exactly the same with the new drivers, showing no improvement. Similarly, Dragon Age: The Veilguard does not see any performance boost. However, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered experiences a 27% improvement in performance with the latest drivers on the Radeon RX 9070 XT, jumping from 169 FPS to 214 FPS.
Another significant improvement occurs in Hogwarts Legacy, where the performance increases from 130 FPS to 153 FPS, marking an 18% improvement with the new drivers.
In some games, there are no improvements; in others, the improvements are modest, and in some cases, the changes are more significant. On average, the new drivers enhance the Radeon RX 9070 XT’s performance by 9%, while the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti has only seen a 2.5% improvement with the latest drivers.
Performance at Different Resolutions
At a resolution of 1440p, the Radeon RX 9070 XT sees an average performance boost of 9%, while the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti improves by 2.5%. At 4K resolution, the average performance improvement for the Radeon RX 9070 XT is 4%, while the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti sees a 3% improvement. These improvements are enough for the Radeon RX 9070 XT to compete in the same league as the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
