Rainbow Six Siege Taken Offline After Major Hacker Attack Causes Infinite Credits and Player Bans
In the past few hours, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege has been hit by a hacker attack. Some players managed to obtain almost infinite in-game credits, while others were suddenly and unfairly banned.
Eventually, Ubisoft had to step in and shut everything down. The game’s servers are currently offline so that the developers can investigate exactly what happened and work to restore the situation before the attack.
The French company explained on social media that no player will be banned for spending credits received due to the breach. However, Ubisoft confirmed that a wave of bans was automatically triggered during the attack.
Ubisoft Investigates and Works on Fix
Once the investigation is complete, the team will need to determine who was unfairly punished and who was not. They will also need to identify the security flaws that allowed hackers to carry out the attack — possibly taking advantage of the Christmas holiday period when fewer staff were monitoring systems.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. A few years ago, Ubisoft sued the hackers responsible for a DDoS attack on Rainbow Six Siege, but there have been several other security breaches against the company and its games over time. Some have involved ransom demands and leaks that damaged Ubisoft’s reputation.
In this case, Ubisoft has not officially called the incident a “hacker attack”, instead describing it as an “incident” until the investigation is finished.
However, cybersecurity group Vx-Underground has claimed that two separate attacks were carried out by four different hacker groups, allowing them to issue bans, modify inventories, and distribute unlimited credits to players.
Ubisoft has not yet provided a timeline for when servers will return online but has promised to share updates as soon as possible.
