Razer Snaps up Robin Smartphone Maker Nextbit

Razer has whipped out its cheque book once more this month, snapping up mobile company Nextbit. Nextbit is well-known for their crowdfunded Robin smart phone, and while the phone wasn’t anything crazy in terms of specifications, it had a stylish design that clearly got the attention of the Razer team.

No information has been released on the financial details of this deal, but we do know that all 30 employees from Nextbit are now joining the Razer team. I mean, it gives a huge hint that Razer would be working on a mobile device, that much is fairly clear, but Tom Moss, founder and CEO of Nextbit said the company will still exist, albeit as an internal Razer team, and still plan to create similar products and experiences, but “bigger and better.” Those who purchased a Robin will have their warranties honored for 6 months, and can expect updates and security patches till Feb 2018.

This is the third big purchase for Razer in recent years, with them buying up Ouya, and more recently THX. It’s clear they’re looking to expand into other markets, while also growing their team with talented engineers from various markets. Whatever they’re up to, we’re sure it won’t be long before we hear some new announcements from Razer.
