Razer Viper 8K Ambidextrous eSports Gaming Mouse Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The Razer Viper 8K Ambidextrous eSports Gaming Mouse is available right now from many major retailers worldwide. It’s currently on Amazon for a very tasty £67.98, which is a small price to pay for this level of technology and performance! I’d be very tempted by the Viper Ultimate too, which is basically the same mouse with their HyperSpeed Wireless technology, and I’m sure that would be excellent if you don’t want the cables in the way! It’s also available on Amazon US, but I can’t see a price at this time, but I expect the Razer Viper 8K to be around $80 in the US.

Overview

Razer is one of the biggest names in the business. Sure, they’ve got a huge following of dedicated fans, and without a doubt, a few naysayers too (find me a brand that doesn’t!). However, when it comes to bleeding-edge gaming technologies, they’re always on point, and that’s certainly easy to see with the Razer Viper 8K gaming mouse.

I’ve tested a few mice recently that are so far ahead of what we had just a couple of years ago. Razer isn’t the only one making these advances. Corsair has its own 8000 Hz polling rate mouse, the Sabre RGB Pro, and it’s fantastic, and they have their ultralight KATAR PRO XT. SteelSeries has an ultra-light mouse with a stunning sensor, the Aerox 3, as do MadCatz, and Tecware, to name but a few.

Best of the Best

However, I think Razer has all of them beaten in the game of eSports mouse top-trumps. It’s not the lightest of the pack, but at 71g, it’s pretty damn light and unlikely to be a burden. Plus, it manages this without needing the exoskeleton design we’ve seen on rival models, such as the 69g Exo Elite RGB. It has 8K polling, and Corsair has 8K polling, but Razer has them beaten in sensor technology. This mouse tracks faster and at higher DPI, G, IPS, whatever your measurement, total it all up and Razer is number 1. “Razer focus+ 20 K optical sensor: A 20,000 DPI sensor with 99.6 percent resolution accuracy ensures that even the finest movement of your mouse is tracked, giving you an acute level of precision for game-winning headshots and highly elusive manoeuvres” as Razer put it themselves, and I have to agree, it’s pretty fantastic.

eSports

I’m not an eSports gamer. I’m not even a competitive gamer. In fact, I rarely even play multiplayer stuff casually these days outside of peripherals testing. I’m a Covid lockdown has honed me into a lazy MMORPG gamer, and I love to kick back with some Elder Scrolls Online on an evening as a trader. I like city building games, old-school single-player shooters like Unreal, and I spend the day working in Photoshop and WordPress. So taking the Razer Viper 8K into my world was very pleasant. The ergonomics are great, the click response is tight, and the tracking of that sensor is awesome in any application. Plus, the ambidextrous design gives me two extra buttons to throw some macros into the mix. Competitive gamers are going to love what this mouse has to offer, but it’s still a nice day-to-day mouse in the office too.

Should I Buy One?

At this price, absolutely! It’s amazing the level of performance and technology you can get these days for under £70! I’ll admit that this mouse has some fierce competition for the most part and you’d be delighted with those products too. However, I can’t ignore the fact that Razer edges the lead on the sensor technology here. It’s one of the lightest, fastest and most accurate mice on the market right now!
